Preparing Heavy Equipment for Winter
October 23, 2017Even though temperatures have been making it feel like an extended summer here in PA, cold winter weather is not too far away. The harsh winters we face in the Northeast can take quite a toll on your heavy equipment unless you take certain precautions to help minimize the risk of damage.
Eagle Power & Equipment wants to help you maintain your equipment in the best possible shape, so we’ve put together some tips on how to prepare heavy equipment for winter. No matter what type of industrial equipment your company relies on, these general tips should be useful.
Visual Check
The first place to start is your owner’s manual. Typically these have oil and fluid recommendations as well as other seasonal maintenance tasks specific to your machine. A thorough inspection of the equipment will help flag any issues that could be exacerbated when the temperatures start to drop. Take a good look at your tires, batteries, wiring, hoses, and attachments, and repair or replace any items that show damage like cracks, cuts, or worn spots. The machine should be kept as clean as possible to help you spot leaks and other problems.

Skid Steer/Compact Track Loader Maintenance Tips

Our blog series on heavy equipment maintenance continues today with some tips on skid steer/compact track loader maintenance. The goal of this series is to save you downtime and repair expense by keeping you informed of proper maintenance techniques for heavy equipment. You can browse our previous posts on excavator maintenance tips, wheel loader maintenance tips, or loader/backhoe maintenance tips through the links.
Just as with your excavator, wheel loader, or loader/backhoe, your skid steer/compact track loader is simple to maintain when following a Skid Steer/Compact Track Loader Inspection Checklist. Such a list should cover all service points, including:
- Safety equipment & operator cab
- Engine
- Loader
- Cooling system
- Electrical system
- Tier 4A (DPF)
- Tier 4 Interim & Final (DPF/DOC/PMC/SCR)
- Drive Line
- Linkage
- Hydraulic system
- Fluids & lubrication
Track tension & tire pressure. One of the most important tips is to regularly check and adjust your track tension or tire pressure. Improperly fitted tracks can cause several issues, whether the track is too tight or too loose. A track that is too loose may have the drive lugs hop over the sprocket rollers and cause premature wear and tear. Too tight and the undercarriage will wear more swiftly. Making it routine to take a few extra moments to check can save you a hassle down the line.

One of the most important maintenance tasks for your loader/backhoe is keeping it properly greased, while avoiding excess grease that can collect dust and dirt, getting into joints and causing more wear and tear. Any noise coming from pivot points, joints, bearings, bushings, or other areas needs to be dealt with immediately. Ensure you’re using the proper grease by referencing your owner’s manual or by asking a trusted heavy equipment dealer like Eagle Power & Equipment.

Just as with buying a used car however, some people perceive a stigma, and stubbornly avoid buying anything but new machinery. Here at Eagle Power and Equipment, we deal in used equipment on a regular basis, and we think it’s important to dispel some of the most common used industrial equipment myths. Perhaps we can even change your mind.
Myth #1: The equipment was sold or traded in because it had issues – Perhaps the most common problem buyers have with used equipment is that the previous owner unloaded it due to some type of irreparable problem with the machine. However, the truth usually is simply that the previous owners’ needs changed, and a newer model or even a different kind of construction equipment was better equipped to serve them.
